An astrology sign is a sign that you have depending on when you were born. For example, someone who is a Pisces was born between February 19 to March 20. Although the author of Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson, didn’t tell us when each character was born, I assumed which astrology sign they were due to their characteristics. After researching each astrology sign, I found information about the likes and dislikes of each sign. This helped me make a decision of which sign I felt fit each character.
To begin with, Melinda Sordino is the main character of the book, and I believe her astrology sign is Virgo. Someone who is a Virgo is commonly loyal, analytical, kind, hardworking, and practical. I believe Rachel’s astrology sign could be Libra. A Libra is described to be cooperative, gracious, fair-minded, and social. Rachel is especially social because she has so many friends and is always hanging out with them whether it’s during school or after. Although she has her opinions on people, she seems like she can talk or work with almost anyone that is around her which I think makes her cooperative. Rachel is gracious because she is kind to her friends and cares about them. Rachel broke up with Andy Evans after she found out that her boyfriend caused her and Melinda to lose their friendship. Melinda and Rachel eventually start to rebuild their friendship. I also believe Rachel’s astrology sign is Libra because some weaknesses of a Libra are indecisive, avoids confrontations, will carry a grudge, and self-pity. Rachel carried a grudge on Melinda for ruining the party, and she avoided confronting her to find out the real reason why Melinda called the cops. Melinda didn’t call the cops to ruin the party, she called because she was scared and didn’t know what to do after Andy raped
