Goffman defines impression management as both the verbal and nonverbal ques that people use to present an acceptable image of themselves to others. Goffman dedicated a lot of study to the idea of impression management and how people perform it. Well some symbolic interactionists, like Mead and Blumer were interested in the ideas of understanding the internal conversations people have well determining proper conduct; Goffman’s focus was on the actual social environment and physical interaction of individuals that shapes their views of self. Goffman’s idea of self is rooted in the interaction, not the internal reflection one has. In “asylums” Goffman focuses his study on the daily activities of a mental hospital, which he considers a total institution.
