AT&T is America’s largest wireless carrier and telecommunication service. This company provides long-distance and local telephone services in all America since the 1900s. AT&T was suited twice for Sherman Antitrust Act. The first suit was because the company controlled most of the U.S. telephone lines and equipment. The second antitrust suit was for the division of Bell System. After the second case, AT&T divest into 22 regional telephone companies. These 22 companies divested again and reorganized into seven regional telephone networks: Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, NYNEX, Pacific Telesis, Southwestern Bell, and US West. Microsoft starts to bundle additional programs with their operating system. Anyone who buys a PC would automatically get Microsoft spreadsheets and word processor and other programs whether they want them or not. By the mid 90’s, Microsoft’s aggressive tactic began. Computers accused the software giant monopolizing the industry. The bundling of the software led to the DOJ investigating a lot of claims that Microsoft’s business practices were unfair, because they “obligate” most consumers to use Internet Explorer, their Internet browser rather than Netscape. Microsoft’s decision to put all their programing software in Windows prohibit other browsers for substitution. This action was considered as “monopoly” since it did not benefit the consumers and protect Windows from competitors. I think the move was necessary because if Microsoft didn’t suit for antitrust act, we will not have new browsers such as Google Chrome and Safari.
