At what point is “teasing” considered bullying? Cyberbullying involves sending or posting harmful or cruel content or images using the internet and social media (i.e. instant messaging, emails, chat rooms, and other social networking sites). The influx of digital communication devices such as cellphones and computers, used to search and post, have lead to cyber stalking, threats, harassment, impersonation, humiliation, trickery and exclusion (Feinbery, page 1). People need to do more to stop cyberbullying. Social media makes it easy to bully people while hiding behind a computer screen. 81% of teens say bullying is easier to get away with online (Laird, page 1). Teens know this because they have either seen it, it has affected them, or they have done it and got away with it themselves. Knowing that makes you think about how many people have had to go through the pain or being bullied or have bullied someone themselves. 3 million kids per month are absent from school due to bullying (Laird, page 1). The fact that these kids are too scared to even go to school proves that bullying has gone too far. Cyberbullying has made it easier for the bullies to get to these kids at home. If more people kept an eye out for it it wouldn't get that far and school would be a safer place. 20% of kids cyberbullied think of suicide and 1 in 10 attempt it (Laird, page 1). 20% does not seem like a lot but it is a bigger percent than you think. This number is much higher than it needs to be. Kids and teens ages 10 to 16 suicide shouldn't even be an option. They need an environment they feel safe in. If more people put in an effort to stop bullying and cyberbullying the number of kids suicides per year would go down. Suicide is the #3 killer of kids in the United States. (#1 Car accidents & #2 Homicide) (Laird, page 1). Suicide should not be the number 3 killer of kids in the United states. Suicide rates are way too high and very detrimental to families and our society. Those kids that decided to take their own lives had a family imagine how the kids family felt to find out that one of the amazing kids in there family took its own life because of being bullied. Reading these statistics and talking with other peers and family members the general consensus was that this is a much larger problem than first thought and warrants intervention. Without love, friends, and family people are bound to live a very lonely life they may not feel is worth living and that shouldn't be the case.
