A City of Strength or Intellect? In Ancient Greece, Athens and Sparta are two well-known names, back then and now. These two city-states were at war for quite a long time, which showed how different they were. Personal rights, education, and government were some of the things that were quite different. Different negatives and positives would come from living in either city, so I’ll be telling you why I’d rather live in Sparta. Athens is the perfect example in the difference in women’s rights, or lack of them. In Athens, women’s entire lives are controlled by men. Women can’t go to school like the men and have to look after the household. Women have no voting rights and have no say whatsoever in the government. They went to school, just like the boys, and learned wrestling, gymnastics, and were trained to fight in combat. Since men were very often out training for war, or in one, women were responsible for protecting the city, which is why they were trained to fight. Women could also own their own land, owing up to 1/3 of the entire city’s land. Although, when Spartan women turn 18, they must pass a test of strength. If passed, they are set up to be wed, if failed, they could not get married and would no longer be regarded as Spartan citizens. As mentioned before, girls, like the boys, went to school in Sparta. Although, what they teach in Spartan schools is very different than Athenian schools. Athenian education was mainly focused around literature, math, and science; even learning to speak in public because their society revolved around public speaking. Spartans, however, focused more in athletics, they taught things like discipline, obedience, and strength in both mental and physical ways.
