Athens and Sparta had different forms of lifestyle. Thier citizens also had very different ways of life. Athens was a walled city near the sea with ships came and went from a busy port. Inside the city walls of Athens, accomplished master potters and sculptors worked in workshops to create brilliant furniture that can easily be traded to sailors from different regions. Freemen were the main elements of citizenship in Athens. The city's citizens gathered together for every issue in the city and debated what they thought is right which means they are direct democracy. Sparta considered strong soldiers to be their greatest strength and simplicity was also preferred and this can be seen in the Spartan buildings to clothing. Contrasting from Athens, Spartans thought that trading with other city-states would lead to new ideas that might weaken the government. Alike to Athens, men from 18 years old are considered freemen but their Assembly had little power, only the small Council of Elders held the actual power. Their government was ruled by a few old people because they thought old people are the wisest to ruled the city-states. Council of Elders suggested laws for Members of the Assembly to vote for, they could only vote for yes or no. Differing from Athens, Spartans schools mainly taught wrestling, boxing, foot racing, and gymnastics. Spartan women are almost ranked the same as men, they learn basic fighting skills enough to defended themselves when invaders came instead of doing household like Athenian women. Slaves in Sparta are mostly people from others city-states because their land are taken by Sparta for goods and they had to work for Sparta as slaves.
