Paul O’Sullivan Poseidon: Poseidon is the son of Rhea and Cronus and younger brother of Zeus. He is the god of the sea and father of Polyphemus and seeks revenge on Odysseus for blinding his son. Ogygia: Ogygia is the island where Odysseus was held captive for seven years by Calypso and kept him from returning to Ithaca. Mentor: Mentor is the son of Alcimus and is regularly impersonated by Athena. When Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, goes to serve in the Trojan War, Mentor takes care of his home and becomes the guardian and teacher of his son Telemachus.
In Greek mythology they believed in a second order of divine, males were Titans and women were called Titaness. The Titans were one of twelve primeval deities. The Titans were made up of six men and six women, their mother was Gaia, who was the mother of the earth and the father Uranus was the father of the sky. The six Titans were Oceanus, Hyperion, Coeus, Cronus, Crius, and Lapetus. The six Titaness were Mnemosyne, Tethys, Theia, Phoebe, Rhea, and Themis.
Both passage one and two share a multitude of themes throughout each story. Each story showcases different lessons to be learned, but are both a story of the sky needing to be held up, but either character not wanting that burdensome task. Both stories showcase the themes of selfishness and untrustworthiness. One of the first themes exhibited in both passages is that being selfish and taking the easy way out can make it harder for other people.

Poseidon was a Greek god of the sea, earthquakes and horses, he also ruled the Mediterranean Sea and the black sea. This means he is the ruler of the sea. He was worshipped for navigating people at sea and for being a fertility god. Poseidon’s powers include, creating storms, earthquakes, floods and summoning sea monsters. He is the second son of Cronus and Rhea, he is also the brother of Zeus, Hades, Demeter, Hestia, and Chiron.
Poseidon is one of the most known Greek gods throughout Greek myths. It is said that Poseidon controlled more then just the sea he also was able to control earthquakes droughts, rivers, and even floods. Even though Poseidon was one of the more powerful Greek gods he tended to have a bad temper as there are various stories about Poseidon some have even said he gave humans the first horse. Poseidon had a stormy and violent nature but also was stubborn. Poseidon's palace deep in the ocean then sought after a wife to bear his child.

Prometheus defies the gods by helping humans, and he is most notable for bringing fire from Olympus, and the skill of metal work. Zeus devises a cruel torture for him. Prometheus gets picked at every day from his liver by an eagle, while being chained to a rock, and
Through an introduction of the lineage of the gods, D’aulaires’ shows the length an individual will go to in order to hold power. Even sons killing fathers to gain power. In the book, the titan, Kronos, must slay his father in order to take power. In turn, Kronos’s son, Zeus, kills him to take the throne. He shared power with his relatives, all gods with a purpose and power while watching over the world.
Titans are mythological entities used to understand the intended chaos and creation of the world before the gods were born. Many years later the Olympian gods, including Zeus, and the Titans had a series of wars called the Titanomachy to decide who would rule the universe. Once the Olympians won the war lead by Zeus, the Titans were all confined to Tartarus except for Atlas. Atlas has 3 brothers, Menoitios, Prometheus, and Epimetheus all from their mother Clymene, a sea nymph, and the Titan Iapetus. Atlas, being the one who led the Titans to war, was showed great hostility from Zeus unlike the rest of his family.
After Zeus took over his father’s thrown the three brothers fought to determine which of the three would sit on the thrown. Zeus won the fights and became the ruler of the gods, as well as lord of the sky and rain. His weapon was the famous thunderbolt, which he hurled at those who displeased or made him mad, especially liars and oath breakers. He was married to Hera but as he was also well known for having for his many affairs with other goddesses.
Prometheus was a titan from Greek mythology who was well known for his creation of man and gift of fire. He was a clever trickster who is well associated with science culture and also gifted the skill of metalwork. After a war, the rest of the titans were punished except for Prometheus, who was on the winning side with Zeus. He then was appointed to being the protector and benefactor of mankind. Prometheus had the responsibility of providing survival skills to man.

Throughout his voyage, Poseidon delayed him of returning home by providing strong storm on the sea which caused the ship to destroy. Poseidon did not only delay his homecoming, but made him face different dangers and also saved him from the Trojan war. Zeus was the king of the gods who intervenes in dispute between gods and also men. He also has the power to make other gods do what he pleases. In his role in odyssey, he sent Hermes to order calypso to release Odysseus to return to Ithaca.
