The Atom and Japan
The atom bomb testing left a shallow hole about 1200 feet in diameter with sand and gravel melted into glass due to the intensity of its heat. No one could imagine the suffering the atom bomb and its counterpart would cause on two cities. With the war waging on in Japan and the United States looking for an easy win, the race was on. July 16, 1945. The first test run for the new super weapon to end the war in Japan was tested (Cahn 17). How the atom bomb works and ticks is important for the devastation of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the people of Japan.

The bomb was made with precision and had many scientist on the team to make sure everything went as planned. At the center of Fat Man, a atom bomb named after Winston Churchill, was just the slightest source of neutrons that were surrounded by layers of reflectors for those neutrons (Novick 11).
