Johnny is a seven-year-old boy with an affinity for math. However, he has been displaying troublesome behavior at school and with his friends. He loses items, makes mistakes on previously learned material, has difficulty sitting still and following directions. In addition, the other children avoid playing with Johnny claiming he his loud and bossy. The results of our evaluation have determined that Johnny meets the criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Parents tend to have many questions about what ADHD is, what causes it, who, if anyone, is at fault, what can be done, and what to expect. The following paragraphs will touch on each of these topics. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder where the individual has symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, or both (Comer, 2014). Johnny’s symptoms are predominantly those within the hyperactivity and impulsivity category. Such as, his inability to sit still, leaving his seat during classroom instruction, inappropriately climbing under and over desks or jumping out of line, difficulty engaging in play, excessive talking, and he often interrupts others and/or has difficulty waiting his turn (CDC, n. d.). ADHD is a disorder that presents the individual with unique challenges over the course of his or her life. Stress and difficulties are a part of everyone’s life but affect those with ADHD more dramatically. Children may experience developmental delays and difficulty with emotional control; teenagers may experience a reduction in symptoms; adults may experience difficulties with daily responsibilities, relationships, and low self-esteem (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, 2016; Comer, 2014).
