I: Introduction Attention Getter - Imagine you’re watching your favorite sports team play. The national anthem starts playing, but your team is nowhere to be found(keynote picture of refs nothing else). Or they may be on the field, but they are kneeling or sitting instead. How would that make you feel as a fan? Can you support a team that disrespects the national anthem? Orientation phase - It all began during a preseason game when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem. A photographer from ESPN quickly snapped a photo, and it went viral. According to CNN reporter (Willingham, 2009) Kaepernick stated that he did not want to stand up to show pride in a nation that oppress African Americans. Relational Connection - Most of us in here have been to a high school football game on Friday night. We all connected to the sport of football someway or somehow. How it impacts the audience - Like I stated before, everyone in this room has watched a football game before, most likely on T.V. We even have a professional football team in this state. (keynote picture of Colts team kneeling). The protesting occurs within our own state. Additionally, the method of which the NFL addresses the protesting epidemic could trickle down to college and even high school level sports. Thesis: The gesture of kneeling during the national anthem should be prohibited as it irrational and it disrespects the flag and the people who fought for our country. Points Principle: My speech will primarily focus on how kneeling during the anthem shows disrespectful towards the flag and veterans, how kneeling is a counterproductive way to start a movement, and how kneeling or other methods of protesting brings pain and separation in our …show more content…

Many agree with the meaning of the protest, but the timing and the method of the protesting is what angers people. According to ESPN reporter(Triplett, 2016) NFL quarterback Drew Brees believes in the Kaepernick’s message, but not the method of protesting. “It's an oxymoron that you're sitting down, disrespecting that flag that has given you the freedom to speak out,” stated Brees. Fans have become outraged with protesting. Thousands of videos have been posted on social media showing fans burning jerseys over a fire (keynote video of fan burning jerseys) The protesting even brought division among NFL teammates. Some had family members in the military, and it caused conflict within the teams as some refused to protest while others wanted to. Opposition: Although it may not be the intention of the players to disrespect the flag and veterans during the anthem, it is still viewed as an act of rebellion.
