To kill a mockingbird is to sin by killing that that does nothing but sing. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, many characters exhibit courage during a time of tension in their town. Characters such as Scout and Atticus portray many types of courage to protect themselves and others.
To start, Atticus exhibits courage by standing up for his beliefs and protecting those he holds close. First, an example of when Atticus portrays courage is when he takes the case to defend the black man accused of rape. As Atticus is talking to Scout, he remarks that “every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess” (Lee 101). Atticus knows that accepting the opportunity to defend Tom Robinson in court is dangerous because it will put him and his family in an unforgiving situation. Furthermore, Atticus expresses courage when he frequently states, “it's not time to worry yet” (Lee 139). This quote is used by Atticus to shield Scout and Jem from danger. To start, while Scout is at her missionary tea, some of the women there, she realizes, could have helped Tom Robinson after learning about his wrongful sentence. However, she exerts courage when she realizes that her “Aunty could be a lady at times like this” ( Lee 318). With this realization, Scout uses her courage and strength to serve them politely instead of being her usually hotheaded self.
