Racial discrimination towards any race is wrong. The idea that all men are created equally is not true. To Kill A Mockingbird is a prime example of this.
The first time discrimination appears in to kill a mockingbird was towards the beginning of the book. Scout asked Atticus are you a Nigger lover? Atticus says [“Don’t say Nigger Scout, that’s common” (Lee,85)]. Atticus is talking to Scout about a word that is commonly used to put down a Black person. This suggests that Harper Lee does not like the word “Nigger” because it is used to be discriminatory towards Black’s. Scout asks Atticus, “Atticus are you a Nigger-Lover?”(107) Atticus was surprised to hear this and wondered where Scout had heard it from. Scout heard it from her schoolmates who heard about Atticus defending Tom Robinson. (A black man accused of raping a white woman). Harper Lee wanted Atticus to show us that Nigger-Lover is not proper and it is rude to say that. This is why she used Atticus (an important and wise character in the book) to teach us a lesson. The topic of discrimination comes up throughout the entire book. Another example of this can be found in the quote [“Mixed kids don’t belong anywhere”(183)] Harper Lee believes that mixed people are shunned out by both Black’s and White’s.
