When Atticus is talking to Jem about why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, he’s only trying to explain why people do the things they do. In an article it claimed, “Atticus symbolizes logical thinking; he is able to act on the right thing while still trying to keep the peace in the small town he loves. His upstanding morality is characterized by a lack of pride, in stark contrast to Bob Ewell (we see this when his own children don't even know he's a perfect shot, for example). As he instructs Scout and Jem on the proper ways to behave, he symbolizes a teacher for all of the novel's readers as well” (Cook). Atticus always cared about Jem and Scout out of pure innocence which makes him symbolize a mockingbird.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays Atticus Finch as the sage archetype, presenting him as a wise and shrewd lawyer who confronts prejudice with tenacity while concurrently fulfilling his responsibilities as a parent to educate his children regarding the nature of society. Atticus Finch employs his knowledge and moral convictions to guide his children, Jem, and Scout Finch, as demonstrated when he urges Scout to "hold [her] head high and keep [her] fists down" while hearing the unpleasant remarks of others concerning the Tom Robinson trial. By using indirect characterisation, his words reflect his knowledge of the consequences for defending Tom Robinson, which will be reflected on his family; thus, he wishes to protect his family from the vexatiousness of the trial, enunciating the attributes of the sage archetype as he is understanding of morality, with which he guides his children, and is represented as a wise family figure.
He treats his children with respect, and explains to them what they do not understand. The text states, "I never went to school,' he said, 'but I have a feeling that if you tell Miss Caroline we read every night she'll get after me, and I wouldn't want her after me'" (Lee 42). The text later states, "Atticus said to Jem one day, 'I'd rather you go shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird'"

As seen in the novel, there are many interesting and dynamic characters present. One of the characters whom specifically appealed to me was Atticus, the father of Jem and Scout and a well-known lawyer in Maycomb County. Despite the fact that this story is set in the 1930s, in the South, during the time of segregation and great racism due to the aftermath of the Civil War, Atticus still keeps his high moral standards. Throughout the book, he seems to be a static character, as his values and opinions do not drastically change as the story progresses. From the beginning, it could be seen that Atticus always believed in equality for all men- whether he be black or white.
