To Kill A Mockingbird is about the racist, one-sided opinions in the Great Depression and its fight for justice towards Tom Robinson who was accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch was one of the few white men who believed Tom. Atticus took his case with no hesitation. In To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee highlights how individual strengths are needed to make changes in the world. Atticus takes the risk of defending the Tom Robinson case; he knew that people would have comments but he did not care. Atticus wanted to make a change in the world. Atticus says “ you never really understand something from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (pg. 39) He is showing that you can't judge someone's struggles until you put yourself in their shoes. Atticus explains that it doesn't matter what you look like. “Some negros lie, some negros are immortal, some negro men are not to be trusted around women black or white. Link always had Tom’s back and the colored communities. At Tom's trial, Link yelled at the judge Tom is a great worker and he wouldn't hurt a fly. “Mr. Link Deas made a job for Helen. He didn't need her but he said he felt right bad about the way things turned out” (pg. 334) Link found out Bob Ewell and his children were giving Helen trouble on the way to work. Link saw Bob following Helen and was leaning on Link's fence. He screamed at him “ now hear me out bob ewell if I hear one more peep outa my girl Helen abt not being able to walk this road I'll have you in jail before sundown!”(pg. 334) Link always made sure the Robinsons are always safe because they are such nice people.
