Good morning everyone, my name is Anna Hoheisel and it's my pleasure to represent the State of Maycomb County and to serve as a prosecutor on this very important case. On August 26, 1939, the defendant in this matter Atticus Finch, for not doing enough to defend his client Tom Robinson. At the conclusion of this case, and after you have heard all the evidence we have for you, we are confident that you will return a guilty verdict on the fact that Atticus did not do enough to defend Tom Robinson. We are calling Jem and Scout Finch for evidence of what Atticus had to say about the case back at home. Helen Robinson and Link Deas for having evidence of what Tom had to say about Atticus and what he said he was going to do. Tom Robinson was accused of the rape of Mayelle Ewell on November 21, 1935. Atticus Finch was the lawyer for Tom and failed to defend him. Tom still ended up going to jail and later getting shot. SCENE On a sunny afternoon on August 26, 1936, Atticus Finch failed to defend Tom Robinson at the Maycomb County courthouse for the trial of Tom Robinson and Mayelle Ewell. For example, Atticus said to Jem and Scout, "Don't worry about anything. It's not time to worry." (Lee 152). This makes Atticus guilty because he wasn't worried enough to do a better job defending Tom. Another example is Scout saying to Jem, "Atticus didn't worry about anything. Besides the case never bothered us except once a week and then it didn't last.” (Lee 156). This also makes Atticus guilty because Atticus didn't put in the time or effort to make his case better to defend Tom Robinson. Then Atticus said to a group of people outside of his house "You ain't scared of that crowd are you?” (Lee 165). This means Atticus wasn't scared of the crowd because he wasn't properly defending Tom the way he should have been. Atticus also said to Mr. Link Deas “Link, that boy might go to the chair, but not until the truth is told.” (Lee 166). Atticus Finch believed that Tom raped Mayelle and did a poor job defending Tom because Atticus didn't believe Tom was innocent. Atticus Finch still made Tom Robinson go to jail and get shot because he didn't want to defend Tom. (Lee 240). This means Atticus didn't care enough to keep Tom out of jail and to defend him from being shot in the first
