Have you ever put others before yourself? There is somebody in the book To Kill a Mockingbird who does this, his name is Atticus. Atticus is a father of two children and works hard every day. Atticus is also a lawyer, who supports a black man who’s name is Tom Robinson, he supports Tom because he knows it is the right thing to do. Atticus carries many traits that should be wanted by everyone, he is hard-working, wise, and kind to everyone. Author Harper Lee uses the character of Atticus in a significant way to help the reader understand that some people actually care more about others than they care about themselves. Atticus is wise because he reads lots of books, and he uses the information from these books to help him in life. Atticus is reading a book while he waits for his son Jem to get better: “H’rm, he said. “The Gray Ghost,” by Secretary Hawkins. Chapter One” (Lee 280) shortly after this, his daughter Scout listens to the story. This shows that Atticus is knowledgeable because he doesn’t just read books about law, he even reads books that entertain him, and these books help him learn more about things that might help him succeed in the trial. Atticus is also wise because he comes up with lots of ideas to try and convince the jury that Tom is innocent. Atticus asks a question in court: “Would you write your name for us?” (Lee 177). This shows that Atticus is knowledgeable because he asks Bob Ewell, the father of the girl who blamed Tom for a crime if he can write his name, and Bob writes with his left hand. This is important because the girl was injured on the right side of her face, and Tom is missing his left hand so it can’t be him. The final trait that should be wanted of Atticus’ is his kindness. Atticus is kind because he is one of the lone people in the town who promotes equality. Scout is curious about why Atticus defends Tom and says: “If you shouldn’t be defendin’ him, then why are you doin’ it?” Atticus says, “For a number of reasons. The main one is, if I didn’t, I couldn’t hold my head up in town” (Lee 75). This shows that Atticus knows he would feel bad if he didn’t accept the job of helping Tom because he just has the natural urge to be kind to others. Atticus is also kind, because he reads to his children, and comforts them when they feel down. Atticus tries to comfort Scout by saying, “Aunt Alexandra didn’t understand girls much, she’d never had one” (Lee 82). This is just one example of Atticus comforting Scout, and he always is by Scout's side, when she feels sad about something that others say to her. This shows that Atticus cares more about others because he supports everyone no matter the situation, and he always knows the right thing to do and say when people feel under the
