During a time where inequality and racism exist doing any action that helps a colored man will cost you something. In order to do good it will require you to sacrifice meaningful things. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus decides to accept a case in which he defends a colored man leaving him to sacrifice many things in order for him to do the best he can to prove Tom Robinson not guilty. Atticus and his family experience many losses that impact their whole family, Atticus shows us how much someone must sacrifice in order to do the right thing even though society doesn’t agree with it. In a time of racism and inequality Atticus defending a colored man in a rape case brought people to attention and caused negativity towards Atticus and his family. When Atticus accepted the Tom Robinson case he knew people would not view him in a good way and would give the Finch name a bad reputation. Atticus’s actions not only upset the public but also upset his family because of the choices he made, ‘’Just what I said. Grandma says it’s bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out a nigger-lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again. He’s ruining the family, that’s what he’s doing ’’ (Lee, 83). Francis tells Scout that her father’s decision of defending a colored man brought shame to their family name and that the family would not be able to walk in public without feeling embarrassed or ashamed. Not only has the choice of defending a colored man damaged the Finch name but also his way of raising his children and what he allows them to do. Also, in a time where girls should wear nice clothes such as dresses and skirts Atticus allowing Scout to dress and be a tomboy reflects poorly on the Finch name. During a case a lawyer must put their energy and mental strength in trying to defend their client, Atticus puts his time and strength into trying to prove Tom innocent and protecting him. In order to protect Tom while he is in jail Atticus has to sit outside Tom’s cell despite he is tired and stressed about the case. During the night time Scout, Jem and Dill decide to follow Atticus even though it was past their bedtime and saw him in front of Toms jail cell, ‘’ He was sitting in one of his office chairs, and he was reading, oblivious of the night bugs dancing over his head’’ (151). Atticus chooses to go out during the night time despite it being late and sits outside Toms cell to make sure no one comes to hurt Tom, Atticus sits in his chair and does not leave Toms side until he is positive that no one will come for him. Next, Atticus is tested through the way people treat him such as when Bob spit in Atticus’s face in order to try and make Atticus get violent or mad, Atticus shows us that he still has some strength in him because of how he reacts, ‘’ Miss.
