Atticus a well known lawyer in the little town of Maycomb in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. He comes up against a tough, rock solid case including an African American man and a young woman who grew up in poverty. Atticus has trust in the power in using the three models of rhetoric. Ethos,Pathos and Logos to prove to the jury that his client is innocent and can walk out of court that day a free man. (Lee).
During both cases, Atticus and Mr. Davis both try to persuade the jury members using logos. Mayella had bruises and marks from being hit with a left hand. Due to all the facts Atticus gave, there is a clear and valid reason that it could have been Mr. Ewell. Mayella was beaten badly by someone exclusively with his left hand. During the trial Atticus asked both Mr. Ewell and Tom to sign a piece of paper.
In the year of 1935 a man was put on trial for a crime he never could have committed, but a lawyer named Atticus fighter to save his life by using his powers in the courtroom. This case was about the rape of Mayella Ewell by an African American man in a small southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus Finch, one of the town’s best lawyers has an insurmountable task ahead of him when he takes on the case of defending Tom from an extremely biased jury. In his arguments he uses persuasion techniques such as Ethos, Logos and Pathos to convince the jury of Tom’s apparent innocence.
“-Don’t see why you touched it in the first place, you’ve got everything to lose Atticus. I mean everything. ”(Lee,195). This excerpt is from when Mr. Heck Tate and Mr. Link Deas comes to inform Atticus that Mr.Robinson will be moved to to jail and that there will be a riot waiting for them. This shows Atticus’s ambition because he knows what the outcome of the case will be.
Atticus knows he will be criticized and hated for defending a black man but he puts all of that aside and stands up for what is
Even when people make choices and take actions that Atticus never would, he still respects them and their opinions(105). Atticus will go to any length to make sure the truth gets
The author discusses how to spot a Christ-like figure in works of literature and what their importance is. The author then gives lists of Christ-like characteristics and examples of Christ-like figures in literature. The author also points out that by using a Christ-like figure in a work of literature, there is a more hopeful message embedded in the story. For example, Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird is a Christ-like figure. Atticus is judged for helping a black man in a city that is infected with segregation and racism.
In to Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses the symbol of a mockingbird to represent innocence and people who only serve as a benefit, or at the very least have little to no negative effect on our society. Just as mockingbirds only exist to make music in the context of their affect on us, the characters in the story that are “mockingbirds” (Scout, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley) do not exist in the societal structure of Maycomb to any negative extent. Boo has almost no actual place in the societal structure of Maycomb, aside from being an urban legend, but still holds the symbolism of a mockingbird as he poses no real threat to anyone but he was still ostracized and stigmatized for no good reason. Scout is a mockingbird due to her obliviousness of
“There is some men outside in the yard , they want you to come out. ”Atticus always will stand up for his clients to the full extent. “Do you remember him beating your face? No I don’t recall him hitting me, I mean yes he hit me.” Some might say that Atticus should have not taken this stand because he was was treated badly.
As seen in the novel, there are many interesting and dynamic characters present. One of the characters whom specifically appealed to me was Atticus, the father of Jem and Scout and a well-known lawyer in Maycomb County. Despite the fact that this story is set in the 1930s, in the South, during the time of segregation and great racism due to the aftermath of the Civil War, Atticus still keeps his high moral standards. Throughout the book, he seems to be a static character, as his values and opinions do not drastically change as the story progresses. From the beginning, it could be seen that Atticus always believed in equality for all men- whether he be black or white.
Atticus Finch is a father of two children, a fair lawyer, a committed community member and most importantly a good person. The setting of the story To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a small town in an era where racism is prevalent, a white person’s word will always be above a black person’s. This attitude is common among the community members of the town and time period but Atticus hasn’t caught this “disease”. Throughout the novel, Atticus stays true to himself with the same morals and characteristics, even in difficult situations. Besides not having any prejudices against the black community, Atticus is also humble, has integrity and empathetic.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, the symbol of the Mockingbird represents how innocence can be misconstructed as being guilty. Harper
From the beginning of the story “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Atticus has taught the young children in the story many lessons regarding the current situation they are encountering at the moment. One of the lessons Atticus taught was not to judge someone until they have walked in that person’s shoes. This lesson shows up numerous times throughout the book and movie of the story. Although the movie has a clear explanation of the teaching, the book has exceptional storylines following the lesson Atticus taught Scout. When the Finches had Walter Cunningham over for dinner one night, Scout was appalled by the way Walter was eating his dinner.
It is through Uncle Jack the conflict of Jean’s character, presented in her argument with Atticus, is offered a resolution. Initially, when Jean confronts Jack over Atticus’s involvement in the council, she is unable to understand Jack’s explanation of why Atticus is the way he is. Jack attempts to explain that for the South, the Civil War was a war to preserve the Southern political and personal identity which consists of white communities. Hence, as a Southerner who attempts to preserve states’ rights, racial equality may not always be favorable, however that does not indicate that Southerners absolutely do not favor racial equality. The implication Jack makes is that the South’s ways do not only define Atticus’s character but also Jean’s
A father plays a crucial role in the life of his children. One modern adage expresses a touching thought about fathers, stating, “Dad, a son’s first hero and a daughter’s first love.” This quote embraces the relationship of Atticus Finch and his children, Jem and Scout, in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Jeremy, the older of the Finch kids, holds his father in extremely high regard and depends on his guidance in life while his younger sister, Jean Louise, trusts Atticus whole-heartedly and adores him despite her occasional indifference toward him. During the three years in which To Kill a Mockingbird takes place, the author grants a glimpse of Atticus’ method of upbringing.
