Being Jewish during the time frame of World War II was unfortunate for Audrey. She was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1929. Her mother raised her in Holland until she was five. Her mother was a Dutch baroness and her father was an English banker. Hepburn spent most of her childhood in boarding school in England due to the worries of her social skills her mother had, she was very shy and quiet. Hepburn suffered greatly during the war. Countless quotes she once said are still being repeated. Remembered for her confidence- Marilyn Monroe. Just like Audrey, she had a devastating childhood that not very many people realize. Before Marilyn was born, her mother was married to a young man at the age of 15 ad had two children before Monroe. They divorced due to her husband being unfaithful. Her husband went away but returned to take away their two children. Monroe’s mother hunted the children down only to find them, months later, happy in a lovely house with her ex-husband with a new wife. She talked to her ex-husband and left… without wishing to kiss the children good-bye. It remains a debate today of the name of Monroe’s biological father. Monroe grew up in a house without her biological parents- although she thought they were her real parents. The couple who took care of her for so long actually had other children and they could no longer take care of Monroe because they were poor. She had seen her mother on several occasions but did not know exactly who she was. Her mother found an English couple to take care of her while her mother worked. One day, her mother decided to build a small white house with furniture. She assured Marilyn that everything would be alright because Monroe’s mother was working double jobs. After her mother was sent to the hospital, her aunt adopted her and that was the beginning of a better life than being in the orphanage. Monroe had problems with boys following her constantly and girls envying her throughout her school years, until her aunt proposed a solution. “You ought to get married (Monroe 23),” was her aunt’s solution. Monroe thought that no one wanted to marry her, but her aunt told her that Jimmy Dougherty wanted to marry her. Monroe had no desire to marry him because she believed he was: “Just like the others, except taller and more polite (Monroe 23).” The family she was living with were moving-that meant she would have to go back to the orphanage until another family came along to allow her into their home. So she made up her mind. She married Jimmy. Jimmy went to war and while he was away, Marilyn was modeling for the fundraising for the war. Someone spotted her and asked her to do more modeling and eventually: act. She dyed her hair blonde, changed her name, and wore low-cut dresses. When her husband came back, they decided together that Marilyn’s acting career was more important than their marriage.
