Horror stories are designed to make our pulses race and our skin tingle. Horror stories often revolve around mayhem and the stuff of nightmares. The stories involve death, evil, the demonic, and the like. A great horror story reflects on an individual's deepest fear. The characters in horror story often may be realistic. All horror stories feature a great deal of suspense. The horror genre got its roots in folktales and traditional. During the 19th century, horror stories did not become a big hit. The suspense in the stories is the uncertainty or anxiety the reader feels about what will happen next. The short story, August Heat, by W.F. Harvey, is about James Clarence Withencroft and Mr. Atkinson who have a weird connection without meeting each other. The story demonstrates how one's mind can create irrational fears. This story is dark and takes place on August 20. The story itself becomes mysterious and suspenseful. The heat is also very important in the story. The writer shows the reader how Mr. Atkinson brings up the extreme heat in town constantly while conversing with James. Foreshadowing is the use of hints to suggest events later in the plot. The foreshadowing in the story is when James entered the gates. It leaves the reader wondering whether James is going to survive or die while being beyond the gates. The clues given to the reader of the chances of the narrator surviving are half and half because he seems to be doing just fine after he meets Mr. Atkinson. A character's situation can change from good to bad in a matter of seconds. When suspense of the story builds up the reader wonders more and more throughout the story. The reader is often left holding his or her breath without realizing it as reading eagerly to find out how the story
