Because of this, Brother continues to make plans to make Doodle more like the other kids his age. While planning this, Brother says“... I began to believe in my own infallibility and I prepared a terrific development program for him, unknown to Mama and Daddy, of course.” (P. 559) Once Brother has had the success of teaching Doodle one thing, he assumes he can teach him anything.
The story follows the conventions of tragedy and illustrates it in the form of a boy named Doodle. The narrator finally decides to help Doodle walk and to teach him different skills. He does this not out of the kindness of his heart, nor for the good of Doodle.
The play “Gem of the Ocean” written by August Wilson is a play that is accurately portraying the lives of former slaves. Wilson does a great job describing the struggles that African-Americans faced even after they were made legally free. Although the laws passed stating that African-Americans were made equal to whites, they were still considered “less worthy” than the whites. This was especially true in the workforce. During this time African- Americans were allowed to find and hold jobs just as the whites were entitled to do.
August Wilson was born April 27th, 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father was a German immigrant whom was a pastry cook whilst his mother was an African American cleaning lady from North Carolina. August was one of the six children they had. Wilson's mother raised all of her six children in a two bedroom apartment above a grocery store as his father was absent for majority of his childhood. August re-signed under his mother’s surname as a sign of respect for her courage throughout a single parent start of his life.

Wilson illustrates his qualities primarily through his use of symbolism in the play Fences.
