Arthur Shelby, the first master of Uncle Tom in Kentucky, is one of the sympathetic characters in the novel. He is gentle not only facing his wife, but also towards his slaves. However, when Shelby faced the prospect of losing his land because of heavy debts, he decided to sell Tom, the favorite slave that helps Shelby in numerous ways, to the avaricious traders to raise income. In his stereotypical mind, slaves are still in the category of property. To the opposite, Emily Shelby strongly against slavery. As a religious Christian, Emily tries her best to influence slaves with her kindness and morals. Clare, Tom’s master in New Orleans, is a thoughtful male against slavery, whereas he is also a complete hypocrite. The painful experience of St. Clare shapes his personality capricious and suspicious. St. Clare has sarcastic about himself, a vegetarian who cannot give up having meat, representatives against slavery who relies on the comfort provided by the cruel system. Marie St. Clare is an indifferent woman who only is concerned with herself. However, her daughter, Eva is presented as a little angel. She always talks about love and forgiveness; even warm the heart of an obstinate girl, Topsy. With the growth of Eva 's age, the friendship between her and Tom is also increasingly concentrated. Eva often reads the Bible to Uncle Tom warmly, while Uncle Tom tells the most wonderful story to Eva. Although Eva born in a noble family, she has no prejudice against blacks or lower class. During her short lifetime, Eva always thinks of those poor people, spread the gospel, and concern about the treatment of slaves. Stowe strengthen her argument that God had used the same blood and flesh to be black and white, and they had the same thoughts and feelings and reason, and the same immortal soul through portraying Eva.
