The story of Robert Wringham Colwan is one of sadness and pity. It is the story of a young man who was living a stable life until pride and poor decision making got in the way. Robert was a good child and lived a fulfilling life. It was when he chose to do and meet the wrong people that he fell from his good state. In addition to his self-conceived sense of entitlement and power, his ability to judge right from wrong became blurred.
Young Augustine and elderly Scrooge both have an imbalance between superficial success and internal happiness. In Augustine’s anecdote about his encounter with a drunk beggar he is miffed by the happiness of a seemingly hopeless beggar. Despite his success in his career, Augustine’s internal struggle to find meaning prevents him from achieving happiness. On the other hand, Scrooge requires three trips with ghosts to realize that there is a better path of existence.

Augustine’s interpretations are equal to Pope Innocents’ but less vicious in delivery by implicating the need for holy grounds and churches for the filth and sinful nature of men.

Confessions by St. Augustine is organized into two main parts, the first 9 chapters being a history of Augustine 's life and reconciliation back to the Lord, and the last 4 chapters being a theological search into the meaning of creation: how it 's all longing to be brought back to the Lord. It struck me while reading Confessions how honest and forthcoming Augustine is about his life. Even though Augustine cannot remember the exact details of his infancy, he begins the autobiographical sections of the book with a description of how he imagines it went based on watching other infants grow up. By this odd starting point Augustine means to dispel the idea that humans are good at birth and become “corrupted” but instead start out full of sin

People have the sense of independence and would never let something like the society in a Brave New World; history has proven it too. The City of God written by Saint Augustine, the bishop of Hippo, depicts the imperfectness of man and the need for God and religion in order to reach salvation. Saint Augustine often times describes the city of man as one that lusts for domination and power, lives according for their own selfishness, and sins without forgiveness. Whereas, the city of God is perfect and selfless with the thoughts to serve God and others by charity. Often more than not, Christians are called to question themselves and what or whom they follow. Many times Christians learn to live to serve God and reject the government that was set into place because the only power one has is the power received by God.
In his “Confessions,” Augustine says that there are people who try to deny the existence of God by asking what God was doing before he created heaven and earth. People claim that Creation happening and how it happened is impossible because they believe that God have to have done something before he created the world. He is trying to answer their philosophical beliefs that led them to ask such a question. How Augustine reply to this question is he use the concept of time and he says that God is eternal time because for God there is no time. I think that Augustine’s reply is convincing.
St. Augustine has many reasons for writing City of God. In A.D. 410, the Goth king, Alaric, captured Rome, which was a shock because the Romans thought that it would never fall. The world itself seemed to have been destroyed, and everyone was looking for answers about what to do and what to believe in. “After 410 he found exiles, those escaping the disturbing events in Italy, arriving in North Africa where he was now Bishop of Hippo and asking how he could explain this collapse of a Christian Empire” (Introduction). Many of the remaining pagans in the world were quick to blame the Christians, claiming that the gods had abandoned Rome and also that the Christian God had failed to protect Rome, as he should have done, since Constantine had declared
Upon reaching the end of the 3rd quarter of my senior year, I have recognized my strengths to be my adept ability to pay attention in the classroom, working well in groups and producing work to the best of my ability. Paying attention in a classroom environment is necessary to understand the assignment at hand, working well in groups as community contributors will help in future situations and I have always found it to be essential to produce work of great quality because it represents the pride I have in my work. Augustine’s conception of the sin in The Confessions is vastly different from today’s version of sin. In the modern world, Christian sin is mainly focused on the seven deadliest whereas Saint Augustine added more onto this list. The book mainly explores St. Augustine’s struggle for celibacy and converting himself to Christianity. Augustine also created a concept he termed as original sin. Original sin states that sin is inherently within all of us, we are all born evil and thus have to fight to be good.
