Australia later benefited from a dramatic surge in its terms of trade, due to falling global commodity prices. Australia is a significant exporter of natural resources, energy, and food. Australia 's abundant and diverse natural resources, attracted high levels of foreign investment and include extensive reserves of coal, iron, copper, gold, natural gas, uranium, and renewable energy sources. A series of major investments, such as the US$40 billion Gorgon Liquid Natural Gas project, significantly expanded the resources sector. Australia has established itself along with other countries in a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which has led to the world’s third largest free trade area in terms of nominal GDP, the countries that are established in the FTA are Chile, China, Costa Rica, Korea, Pakistan, Peru, New Zealand and Singapore. The Australian military officially began in 1901 with the Commonwealth of Australia, which was comprised of the six Australian colonies. The colonies consisted of Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. Australia has four primary military branches, the Australian Defense Force, Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy, which includes the Naval Aviation Force, and Royal Australian Air Force. Australia has played a pivotal part in several wars such as World War 2, and the Vietnam War just to name a few. During WWII as Nazi Germany was invading Poland, Great Britain Declared war on Germany, and in doing so Australia as Great Britain’s Allie also declared war against Germany. Almost a million Australians served in World War II. They fought in campaigns against Germany and Italy, North Africa, and against Japan in South East Asia, and in a few other parts of the Pacific
