Education in Australia and United States are internationally recognised as being of a very high standard. Although both countries follow slightly similar methods of funding, both recognised that their approach is unjust. In Australia, schools (private and public) receive most of the funding from the States, Territories and Commonwealth government (Education Training, 2018). Indeed, the majority of the money comes from the territories and states (approximately three-quarters) goes to public schools whilst the Commonwealth funding goes to private schools (Catholic schools) (Hanrahan, 2017; Boston, 2017).
Throughout the specific era of the Colonial Period (1600-1776), educational practices differed greatly amongst the Southern, Middle, and New England Colonies. The educational customs fluctuated due to the effects of philosophy and religious beliefs in the specific area and time period. The individual roles of each the parent, school, and church determined how the school system and educational practices would coincide together as a whole. Their influence during the Great Awakening, determined the structure and strategies that are used today in the American education system.
Public schools do not require students to wear uniforms, but public schools do have a dress code which every student must adhere to. In the United States, society believes that the students have the right to wear what they like with fewer restrictions. Moreover, an absence of a dress code helps students to express their personalities. When I saw some students at my first U.S high school wearing pajamas, dresses, and shorts, I was shocked because that was forbidden in the Iraqi schools that I attended. On the other hand, in Iraqi public high schools, students must wear uniforms, and they can not be in the school without their uniforms. The culture in Iraq assumes that dress codes help in the process of learning and make the students more disciplined.

Some parents and people think when we give them uniforms it takes away their freedom of expression and restricts them from showing who they are. This is wrong. They can still express themselves in many ways, such as: wearing unique tennis shoes, styling their hair however they want, mix and matching the uniform pieces, wearing fun jewellery, etc. They can also wear the fun clothing outside of school, whenever they want. Uniforms make it so everyone looks together and one, so no one gets better or worse treatment for what they wear.

There are many opinions about the dress code but, schools believe that it plays a key role in students academic performance.
Having dress codes can also be uncomfortable especially with changes in weather throughout the school year. Most dress codes involve long pants for the boys and skirts for girls. During warm summers it can get real hot wearing long pants and in the winter, the girls would not be comfortable wearing skirts in freezing temperatures. To pay attention in school you need to be comfortable in what you are wearing without distractions. There is also the burden and additional expense to parents with students wearing dress codes for school and the other clothes after school which could double family budgets.
You might be thinking about the schools that rich kids go to in movies and TV shows or you might be thinking about Catholic schools with small children all wearing the same colored school uniforms. This is probably what most people imagine. We associate uniforms with students of foreign countries and private schools. Thoughts of students dressing in school uniforms have led to stereotyping and a gloomy outlook on schools pushing for a uniform policy. We live in a society that says you must express yourself and be an individual at all cost, but some fear that uniforms display us as robots who lack the ability to express ourselves, however, this is far from the truth.
