Following the end of World War I in 1918, Italy and Germany experienced many problems within their country. Poor economic conditions, was a major issue these two nations faced after the war. The struggles both countries faced along with extreme nationalism, led to the rise of dictatorship. In Italy, extreme nationalist Benito Mussolini held absolute power as dictator. Nazi party leader Adolf Hitler emerged as the dictator of Germany.
In a newspaper two years before the war had even begun, the founder of an Serbian extremist group called the black hand says that the only way for Serbia to gain freedom and honor is threw war (Document 3). The newspaper states “This war must bring out the eternal freedom of Serbia.” Not only did Serbia want freedom from Austria-Hungary but hornor as well. Austria-Hungary then blamed Russia as the person that killed the ArchDuke and his wife was a Russian person. The Russian government was fully responsible for the killing of the ArchDuke and his wife however, there was a reason behind it. The reason why Russia did this was because Russia wanted to provoke Austria-Hungary into declaring war against Serbia, which Austria-Hungary ended up doing. As soon as Germany gave Austria-Hungary the “blank check”, Austria-Hungary declared war against Russia, which was a big mistake in the long run as this war triggered World War I to occur. In the excerpt, “The Century of Total War '' by Raymond Aron, he states that these two alliances that Austria-Hungary and Russia were in were alarmed, resulting in them fighting back, which came with more heavy incidents (wars) to occur later in the future.
After Serbia appealed to Russia for help, the czar’s government began moving towards mobilization of its army, believing that Germany was using the crisis as an excuse to launch a preventive war in the Balkans. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28. On August 1, after hearing news of Russia’s general mobilization, Germany declared war on Russia. The German army then launched its attack on Russia’s ally, France, through Belgium, violating Belgian neutrality and bringing Great Britain into the war as well.
Austria-Hungary’s Cause of World War I The trigger of one gun being pulled caused the death of 17 million people. On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife of Austria-Hungary were shot and killed by 19-year-old Serbian Nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, during a motorcade after an unsuccessful attempt at bombing Ferdinand. Because of the Triple Entente of France, Britain, and Russia and the Triple Alliance of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy, this event started a chain reaction.

The German Government has advised the Serbian Government to afford the maximum cooperation in this matter in which it finds all Europe against Serbia, and the Russian Ambassador to Berlin has also been approached and has given assurances that he will urge his Government to influence Serbia accordingly. [Doc. 4 Lichtenau to Vitzthum 2, July, 1914. ] The actual assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand did not cause the War it simple gave a great excuse to start the war. He was assassinated by a group of Serbians who were desperate for Serbia to be the best. This secret group thought that by killing the Archduke, they could restore Serbia to its former glory because the Austria-Hungary empire had destroyed Serbia and everything it stood for. Instead of restoring Serbia, it launched an all out war. The alliances that the European countries had with each other (Triple Entente and Triple Alliance) really made this event a bigger deal than it actually was. All of this was caused by over eager patriots who really wanted their country to be the absolute best.

The killing of Ferdinand gave Austria-Hungary the excuse to declare war against Serbia. His beloved wife, Sophie, a former lady-in-waiting, was denied royal status in Austria due to her birth as a poor Czech aristocrat In Bosnia, however, due to its limbo status as an annexed territory, Sophie could appear beside him at official proceedings. On June 28, 1914, then, Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were touring Sarajevo in an open car, with minanume little security, when Serbian nationalist Nedjelko Cabrinovic threw a bomb at their car; it rolled off the back of the vehicle and wounded an officer and some bystanders. Later that day, on the way to visit the injured officer, the archduke’s procession took a wrong turn where one of Cabrinovic’s cohorts, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip, happened to be
