Authors and Artists Similarities Think of two seemingly different jobs that actually have a plethora in common. There is not many to chose from, but one of the few is authors and artists. Author, Gary Paulsen writes realistic fiction adventure novels. Paulson’s novel are written for a younger audience. On the other hand, artist Vincent van Gogh paints abstract pictures of things significant to him. Van Gogh’s artwork is known and liked around the world, even though he died in 1890. Authors and artists are similar because they use elements of their craft, their perspectives and their lives to make their work more intriguing for the reader/viewer. An author writes about their story from the perspective of a character, or sometimes their own perspective and when an author looks at his art they see it in a different perspective than another artist might. Hatchet a realistic fiction book by Gary paulsen follows the journey of Brian Robeson after his parent divorce and after a plane crash , kleaving him in the woods, stranded. The text states, “Terry had just turned to smile at him about something and Brian looked over Terry’s head and saw her.His mother.” (Paulsen, Hatchet 29-30) The reader reads of brian looking at his mother with his own eyes. Due to the story being written in Brian’s perspective we get more emotion and detail on the events that Brian goes though, this gives the text more emotion and detail. Similarly, Artist Vincent van Gogh’s painting The Yellow House is of a house that Vincent van Gogh himself had lived in while he was in france. The painting is of a block of houses a yellow one in particular, there are some shops and some people walking around. The artists paints the sky and the bridges and some trees, the viewer sees the ground and a part of a post. Some of the houses in the picture are larger than others and they all have windows. Due to the artist being farther away we see the ground more and the sky more as opposed to just seeing up close the house or a smaller portion of the house. The perspective of the painting prompts the viewer to ask questions on the artist and the art. A question to be asked in the painting is “where is the sun?” or “How big is the house?” The artists uses perspective to show dimension and the colors show the reader what the houses looked like back then. The perspective of the artist shows us the house, the sky and the street but the perspective of another person might just how a window or the side of the house.
