In this essay, I will discuss how authoritarian governments rose to power in Germany, Italy, and Japan in the 1920s-1930s. Authoritarian governments became popular in these countries for many reasons, however they all came about differently due to their tactics and conditions. After World War 1, Italy sacrificed much of its military to contribute to the war effort. It had not received the land it deserved in the Treaty of Versailles so it relied on the bold leadership of Mussolini who developed Italy into a fascist superpower. Germany had to pay the cost of war to the Allied Powers according to the Treaty of Versailles under the new rule of Hitler who later formed the Nazi Party. Despite this common goal, the transition was unique in each country due to their extremely different conditions. Japan not being involved in the war meant they already had a strong military intact in comparison to the fabled military of nations involved in World War 1. The German and Italian nations were tattered due to the outcome of the Treaty of Versailles; Italy did not receive the land it deserved and Germany had debts from the war. These conditions led to diverse tactics used in each nation to restore their country to its initial strength. Utilizing the anger of the people Hitler, Mussolini, and the Japanese military came to power and continued to use this anger to fuel their ambitious expansion of their nation. Japan used their already powerful military to expand in Asia along with Hitler leading his militia over most of Europe (brown shirts) and Mussolini leading his into Africa (black shirts) all with the common craving for living space.
