Word of the day: Autism! What is Autism you ask? Autism is a condition in which a serious development disorder makes it difficult for the person affected to interact and communicate the way everyone else does. Autism is different for everyone affected with it so not everyone with Autism requires the same treatments, medication nor functions the same. Keep in mind that it’s not just one type of Autism disorders, but three types of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Symptoms of Autism Just like every other condition or disorder, Autism has its categories and symptoms. These categories and symptoms are; “Core Autism Symptoms”- Language Impairment, Social Deficits, and Repetitive Behaviors. The next category is “Associated Neurological Issues”- Sleep Deficits, Mood, Anxiety, Seizures, Hyperactivity and Attention. After that is “Associated Systemic Issues”- G1 Disorders and Immune Dysfunction. Related Disorders consist of Sleep Disorders, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, OCD and ADHD.

Therapies such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Early Start Denver Model, Floortime, Pivotal Response Therapy and Verbal Behavior Therapy. Medications are also a source to treat Autism such as Antipsychotics which are neuroleptics or major tranquilizers which also help treat hallucinations, paranoia, disordered thoughts. There are also three types of Autism such as “Autistic Autism” which causes the person to have language delays, challenges with communication, and unusual behaviors. The second type of Autism would be “Asperger Syndrome” which causes the person to have social delays and unusual behavior but no issues with language or intellectual disability. Lastly there is “Pervasive Developmental Disorders” which makes a person struggle with social and communication
