Ann Hays has a lovely southern accent that makes everyone want to listen more. Ann grew up in the south and her voice reflects the roots of where she is from. When she was growing up she lived through times of segregation and the second world war. Most of all she has lived in a lot of places and has experienced many different states in the U.S. Ann is my grandma and my dad’s mom and she was born in 1942. Ann first lived in Louisville, Kentucky but then after that, she lived in Peoria, Illinois, New Orleans, Louisiana, Savannah, Georgia and then Hazlehurst, Georgia. In her small town in Georgia, segregation was not as prominent but she remembers a different part of town for the African-Americans to live in. She had no contact with the African-Americans at all and she had experienced nothing different. The African Americans went to a different school and had different grocery stores, bathrooms and water fountains. When she was younger her family had a maid named Ethel and Ann said: “ we just loved her to death and she loved us and would call us baby.” When Ann went to college no African Americans were being integrated into her school but when her husband Bill went to college there was the first black man to ever go to the University of Georgia. For Ann living in the time of world war two, she did not experience many different conditions but some rationing was going on at the time. One of her main worries about it was her brother being sent to war. Women's jobs were also really different when Ann was growing up. For example, her mom was the librarian at her school and one of her mom’s friends was one of the first certified female CPA ’s which is an accountant. Back then women jobs were becoming more available and closer to the ones the men did. As always technology is always improving so when Ann was growing up she experienced many technological advancements.
