Introduction The forensic science field has many aspects that are reflected in the media in different ways. These variations of reflection can lead to a mistaken understanding of the field and present a false confidence in not only the forensic science field but also the criminal justice system and law enforcement. Through television shows, podcasts, social media platforms, etc., the reflection hits a wide audience, and that painted view can affect our criminal justice system. One of the media platforms, books, takes the aspects of forensic science and can either turn it into a more documentary/true crime tone or turn it into romance. She is scared of committing to a relationship because of her attack in the busy city and her struggles with PTSD. She is pressured by her neighbor to find a partner and is fought over by the male main characters of the book as there is a tone of jealousy and protectiveness between them. One of the themes of detective fiction, however, is when the detective’s relationship affects the crime. Later in the book, Isobel does get with Garret, but Garret gets murdered. Once Isobel discovers the incident and tries to work the case, her boss points out that “if anyone discovers that [Garretts’] girlfriend was the lead investigator, they could call the evidence into question” which puts a dent in Isobel’s case because Gerrett’s murder was connected to the string of murders Isobel was trying to solve (Scarano, 2023, p.172). Some themes that are represented in detectives include being know-it-all, always working, meticulous to detail, being slightly annoying, and having an epiphany over the smallest of details.
