A sense of belonging can develop and change as one is exposed to new and different situations within an idea, place and/or people. These experiences are examined within the film Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron and the article text Day of Belonging (2004), written by Soumya Bhattacharya. The concept of belonging is differentiated within Avatar and Day of Belonging, one focusing on belonging within an individual and the other initiating a sense of belonging within a group. Both texts interpret a sense of belonging to an idea, place and people, allowing readers and viewers to understand the greater scheme of belonging.

A sense of belonging can be shaped thought a place. This can be examined throughout the film, Avatar (2009) and the article, Day of Belonging (2004), written by Soumya Bhattacharya, both generating a sense of belonging for their given place. Avatar (2009) directed by James Cameron grasps the concept of belonging within the main character of Jake Sully, as he is exposed to the different experiences on the planet of Pandora. This in turn changes Sully’s perspective on how he should live, feel and how to connect with all that is around him. In this example of text and Sully’s experiences within each environment, finding a sense of belonging within each deems harder every time. Sully’s journey allowed him to discover he belonged to another race, the Na’vi. Sully feels excluded from his own race as he is limited in day-to-day activities. However, he feels his sense of belonging to the Na’vi as he is capable of doing everything while also having a feel of freedom.
