As part of our grade in Ms. Martin’s People Skills course, we were required to read a “Self-Help” book and learn from the lessons provided. We should be able to tell how we have applied those lessons to our lives and personal development. The book I chose for the assignment is “Awaken the Giant Within” by Tony Robbins. This was probably not the best choice of books for this particular assignment since this book requires much more time and dedication to its reading than what can be given in an assignment timeframe. The book is exceptionally long, and I knew that when I made my choice, but I did not know that it is not just a sit down and read book. There are “assignments” throughout the book that require an in-depth searching of yourself and steps to overcome to create a difference in your life and destiny. In order to make these changes, we need to transform the way we think. We must raise our standards, alter our beliefs, and modify our strategy. We must shape our lives by what we learn to acquire pleasure from and what we learn will create pain. What we really need is to change the way we feel. When we really consider the changes we would love to make in our lives, the reason we want those changes is the way we feel under those changes. We need to realize what steps we can undertake to make us feel better, and to carry us from pain to pleasure. Our life experience is based on what we focus on, even the choice of words we use can have an impact on how we feel and our lives. We are stopping everything that causes us pain and moving towards having a life filled with more happiness. We are taking steps to get out from under our burdens and release the pain. We are selling our house and all the “stuff” that we don’t need. We have realized that all the “stuff” we have in our lives is clogging our minds and pulling us apart. We need to get back to a basic lifestyle where we are doing what we love, serving God and having enjoyment as a family.
