World War II World War II is known as one of the biggest and deadliest wars in human history. The war, which spanned from 1939 to 1945, involved over 50 nations. World War II was fought between the Axis powers and the Allies. The big three out of all the allies were Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States. The three main Axis powers were Germany, Italy, and Japan. After coming to a humiliating defeat in WWI, Germany signed a peace treaty with France, Great Britain, and the United States. This treaty was also known as the Treaty of Versailles. The people of Germany felt that they were being treated unfairly through this peace treaty as it blamed Germany for starting WW1. Poland's allies, Britain and France, responded by declaring war on Germany just two days later. This became known as the Phoney War, which lasted from 1939-1940. In April 1940, Germany began its invasion of Western Europe. The British, who fought against Germany, evacuated by sea from Dunkirk in late May. The French surrendered soon after Germany invaded France, leaving Britain to fight alone. Germany attacked Britain during the Battle of Britain on July 10, 1940. However, Germany failed to defeat the Royal Air Force. In September of 1940, Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact. This pact formed an alliance between Germany, Italy, and Japan, also known as the Axis powers. In June 1941, Germany decided to invade the Soviet Union with the help of their Axis allies. Hitler launched what was called Operation Barbarossa. On December 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft led an attack on the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor. The next day the U.S. entered the war by declaring war on Japan. In 1942, Germany implemented what they called, “The Final Solution”. It was a plan to exterminate all Jewish people.
