Over the years, the topic of marine pollution has become more of a relevant issue. Some of these issues include the topic of the oil spills, chemical pollution, and waste pollution. This advertisement is meant to address the issues of marine pollution by showing the results. This advertisement addresses two of the most prominent issues from the past few years, oil spills, and waste pollution. In the past 20 years, there have been about 17 oil spills. One of the most memorable from recent years is the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast. Waste pollution is one of most well-known causes of pollution. In the picture, the light represents what people can see. To the general public, something so “small” does not seem to have effect in the world. The light is bright, so it does not take much to look into the water and see something small, making one not have to question what could possibly be a consequence of such a disaster. However, the darkness represents what one little piece of trash can do to the world. It represents the unknown that most people do not tend to look for. Many media images that support the same message often have marine life being affected currently. One example of this is a picture of a dolphin with a piece of plastic wrapped around its tail. It’s odd to see that there is nothing living or being affected in the media since that is the topic being addressed. The absence of this aspect contributes to the main idea behind the advertisement, that pollution will cause the extinction of marine life. Since there is nothing else in the image it allows for the focus to be placed on the gasoline container, the subject of the image. Focusing on this single gasoline container makes the size contrast more prominent. The use of the line of sight shows the effects of marine pollution on the underwater environment. The agency that created this media uses its characteristics to get across the Surfrider Foundation’s message, “There is no such thing as a little marine pollution.” The gasoline container is the most important part because it gets the media’s message across. The contrast of realism and abstract, color, and size helps show that the effects of marine pollution are not something of little concern. While we may not be affected directly by this type of pollution there is a lot more like this just waiting underneath the
