On the 14th of November, 1994, a 15-year-old girl in Chicago missed her school bus and began walking to the subway. It was very dark outside, and the girl noticed an African-American male walking towards her. The man was wearing a black leather jacket and a hat, described as strange looking, with a snap. Moments later, the girl was punched in the eye and dragged into the porch of a nearby house. The man sexually assaulted the girl, forced her to rub dirt on her body, and he fled. The girl ran to a newspaper vendor and called the police. Officers responded and took her to the hospital.

No sperm cells were identified; however, the victim did give a description of her attacker’s appearance to police. She stated that her attacker was African-American, between 25 and 30 years old, and about six feet tall with a beard. The next day police created a sketch of the perpetrator. The drawing was shown around the community and about a week later, police were given an anonymous tip that someone matching the description was working at a local meat market. She victim was taken to the store and asked if she saw her attacker. She identified Dean Cage and he was later taken in for a line-up. The victim identified Cage on the line-up based on his voice.
