The Baby Boom: The Beginning of a New Society The name baby boomers were first created when WW2 ended. When families came home, emotions were at their highs as they were finally able to settle down and spend time with their loves one. The birth rate in Canada was at an all time high, creating the name Baby Boomers. Baby Boomers are historically significant to Canadian Society because of their social impact, development of the economy, and political changes. Social development from Baby Boomers significantly shaped the Canadian society. Music that is listened to now was influenced by the youth culture during the 1940’s-1950’s. The genre of Rock in Roll while was inspired from Jazz, had became dominant, especially among teenagers. Many famous musicians had made a household name including Elvis Presley to the Canadian heart drop, Paul Anka. The entertainment world grew from listening to people on the radio, to the development of Television. CBC became the first broadcast station to open in Canada. During the depression, the birth rate in Canada was at their low with 20.1 per 1000 inhabitants. The government was struggling with the economic development of the country. As people came home from the war, families and new wedded couples were able to have a family together. The birth rate leaped to 24.3 in 1945 to 28.5 in 1959. The rapid development of children boosted up the economy, allowing the government to develop baby bonus for parents who had children. Secondly, when the baby boomers grew older, the government created job security, and pension for the Baby Boomers so even after they retired, they would still be able to earn money.
