In this lab, the experimenters attempted to find a way to inhibit the growth of Bacteria F using provided antibiotics because of the responsibilities of the CDC. As part of the Center for Disease Control, it is the experimenter’s responsibility to prevent a possibly lethal bacterium from spreading and finding a way to slow the bacteria’s growth. Antibiotics aid in that process by killing the bacteria that they come into contact with. The independent variable was the type of antibiotic because the experiment used multiple types of antibiotics in an attempt to find an effective/the most effective exterminator. The dependent variable was the Diameter, in Centimeters, of the Zone of Inhibition. This was the dependent variable because the larger the size of the zone, the more bacteria …show more content…

In the past, Tetracycline was used to treat acne, respiratory tract infections, Chlamydia, and more. The experiment used the three antibiotics and attempted to determine their effectiveness. The actual experiment was set up in 3 parts. First, the experiment had to test whether the bacterium was Gram-positive or Gram-negative. The Gram-stain helped the experimenters learn the traits from paragraph one regarding this bacterium. Gram-staining was done by drying the bacteria then staining it with Crystal violet. After that, iodine was applied, then a layer of Safranin was applied. If the crystal violet is still visible, the bacterium is Gram-positive, but if the bacterium is closer to pink, it is Gram-negative. The second step of the experiment was growing the bacteria. In this section, Bacteria F was streaked across the agar plate. The agar plate provided the bacteria with necessary nutrients, allowing it to grow for the next two days. The antibiotic paper discs were also placed on the agar plate, each disk getting one-fourth of the
