Values Once an employee at Baker Tilly, there are several values Baker Tilly emphasizes that are important to be aware of. From reading Baker Tilly’s Leadership blog, written by their CEO Alan Whitman, three values seem to be manifested in Baker Tilly’s company culture; growth, collaboration, and trust (Whitman, 2016). According to his blog, Baker Tilly is staying true to their value of growth considering they are the third fastest growing accounting firm in the country. This is highly fueled by mergers. With this growing environment, Baker Tilly has emphasized staying true to their core values by making sure that each merger fits into Baker Tilly’s culture before expanding (Whitman, 2016). The larger percent of accountants will go to what is referred to as the Big Four accounting firms: Deloitte, KPMG, EY, and PwC. Nonetheless, there are middle sized firms such as Baker Tilly that many accountants choose to work for as well. The question is what attracts accountants to Baker Tilly over the Big Four. Jay Pribeck choose to work at Baker Tilly for several reasons. First, Baker Tilly has less stressful hours. The big four are known for having their accountants work 80 hours a week sometimes even in the summertime. At Baker Tilly they do have a busy season but then tend to have more relaxed hours in the summer. Jay says he has never worked 80 hours a week while working at Baker Tilly. Additionally, an accounting blog put it best “big accounting firms have become essentially an accounting industry training ground” (May, 2015). Mr. Pribeck did not want to work for an accounting firm for 5 years and then be burned out. He knew from his internship he wanted to stay in public accounting. Along with this, the post also emphasizes ability to take initiative and adapt to different situations (Available Positions, 2016). All of these skills are needed when working in the team based environment that usually occurs in public auditing. Many of these skills are used in the communication process explained earlier in report. For example, auditors use collaboration every day within their team. They come together and develop the audit. This involves other skills such as listening attentively to the team and being able to articulate ideas.. A common technical skill that is needed to enhance communication is the ability to use the data bases the firm supplies to research the client. Using these data bases is crucial to communicating the correct information back to the audit team (Pribeck, 2016). Many outsiders to the accounting profession assume accounting requires many technical skills. Even though accountants are required to complete the CPA exam, which tests their technical skills, the profession also involves more soft skills than outsiders may expect.
