Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a book full of betrayal, love, deception, and knowledge. This book has a variety of properties that can be tied directly to LA100. There are three key concepts that relate to the Columbia College Honor Code; Four-Eyes keeping the books from Luo and the narrator, Luo transforming the little Chinese Seamstress, and the little Chinese Seamstress herself. The first way that the book relates to the honor code is through Four-Eyes keeping the books from Luo and the Narrator. The honor code says, “We are dedicated to both academic and personal excellence through the pursuit of knowledge, the transmission of ideas…”. Four-eyes was depriving Luo and the narrator of the transmission of ideas. Even though books at this time were illegal, Luo and the narrator were pursuing knowledge and were going to receive it no matter what they had to do. The honor code says, “…emphasizes a sense of responsibility for oneself, for others, and for the society…”. Luo dedicated a great amount of time teaching and instructing the Chinese Seamstress. He cared for her and her intellectual abilities, he was responsible for the intelligence she received and he even made an impact in the society. As I have learned in LA100, expressing our ideas and helping people when we know they need it helps to build us and others stronger. As women, it is important for us to be responsible for ourselves and the women around us. We are all in this together and if we do not help one another, we will never get anywhere. Just like Luo did with the Chinese Seamstress, he helped her to accomplish something that she never would have accomplished
