Journey Journey was formed in 1973 by members of various other rock bands. The are best known for the songs and albums from 1978 to 1987. In 1981, the band had one of their top albums of all time, “Escape”. The top songs on this album were "Don't Stop Believin'”, "Who's Crying Now", "Still They Ride", and "Open Arms". Their second best album came out in 1983 and was called “Frontiers”. The popular singles from this album were "Faithfully" and "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)". Their music was a blend of various bands from the time period mainly focusing on one lead singer. Prairie Prince was the drummer, Gregg Rolie performed the lead vocals and the keyboards, George Tickner played the guitar, and Ross Valory was the bassist. When the ”backup band” idea fell through they decided to go for a more jazz fusion style of music. After many failed attempts at coming up for names for the band, John Lennon said they should use the name “Journey”. The band first made their appearance on New Year’s Eve in 1973 at the Winterland Ballroom located in San Francisco, California. Shortly later Aynsley Dunbar, who had been a drummer for various rock bands. On the fifth of February in 1974, the band appeared at the “Great American Music Hall” and subsequently got a deal with Columbia Records. In 1975 they released their very first album that happened to have the same name as the band and sold poorly. In 1985, drummer Steve Smith left Journey to pursue his original passion in jazz, The album, “Raised on radio” in 1986, was planned to be the final album. The band disbanded before deciding on a comeback tour in 1996, this is when they returned with the album “Trial by fire.” In 1998 Steve Perry left and was replaced by Steve Augeri . Several more albums were released. In 2000, “Arrival” was released and in 2003 the 30th anniversary album “Generation” was released. A short while later, the band hired another vocalist, Arnel Pined. After this they released the album “Revelation” in 2011. Since that time, Journey has been satisfied with playing their old songs for a new era of fans. They are also trying to keep the legend of Journey alive for all the baby boomers that grew up with them.
