“Is life in the army what Charley expected?” The book “ Soldier’s Heart” by Gary Paulsen features a fifteen year old boy by the name of Charley Goddard. His fantasy of war isn’t anywhere near the harsh reality the soldiers really have to live through. As the North begins to take the lead in the Civil War Charlie believes that he should join the Minnesota Volunteers because, ever since his father was killed by a fatal blow to the chest by a horse, he feels like he has to be the man of the house.
Soldier Boys is a novel about two young boys, Spencer and Dieter, who have gone off to fight in World War II. Both boys decide to enlist to prove a point; Spencer joins to show his family that he is no longer a silly teenage boy with a crush and Dieter to prove how great of a German boy and soldier he is to the Fuhrer and Germans all over the world. They soon learn that the war is not about them, but instead the people they have chosen to protect and the beliefs they must stick by. The author, gives great insight to both sides of the same war and the emotions involved, because he writes about why people on either side join, how other soldiers and their actions influence what type of soldier a person becomes, and how the outcome of a single
Despite the thirteen colonies defeating Great Britain and gaining independence, new problems erupted regarding how their new nation should be governed. Founding Brothers, written by Joseph Ellis, highlights the challenges the founding fathers faced when attempting to establish a functioning government. Although there were many differing ideas, the widely known men discovered a middle ground allowing them to combat the challenges both at home and abroad, which resulted in the United States of America. Compromises were reached when solving a conflict, but before that stage, the founding brothers had many differing ideas preventing them to move forward. For example, the Compromise of 1790 was discussed with Madison and Hamilton over dinner hosted
Brian Regan is a man from Long Island, New York. Growing up, he was often picked on for his dyslexia, which made people think he was unintelligent. After high school, he cheated on an exam to get into the U.S. Air Force, where he met his wife and was very happy. In 1995, he was moved to the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) where he had access to top secret government information and he learned to code. After falling deep into debt, Regan stole over a thousand pages of classified information from the NRO and attempted to sell it to foreign countries.
America mobilized as fast as it could, establishing training camps, such as Camp Fremont in Menlo Park and Camp Kearny (now Miramar Naval Air Station) north of San Diego. Los Angeles tried to locate the camp closer, protesting that San Diego had too much crime. The government didn’t listen. San Diego was chosen and a camp was created from a dry desolate area. The brush and sand mesas were so out in the country that long after taps, soldiers were serenaded with coyotes.
United States won its independence and formed a lasting republic through events and actions in history. The book, Founding Brothers by Joseph J. Ellis, is about how the events and people of the revolutionary era has “shaped the subsequent history of the United States, including our own time”(pg.3). Ellis focuses on a few founding fathers that contributed to America’s revolutionary success. These founding fathers are Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John and Abigail Adams, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Ellis divides the book into seven sections, each section tells a story of an event that influenced history.
Although Andy Wiest's Boys of '67 and Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers are set in different historical periods, with the former taking place during the Vietnam War and the latter in World War II, both stories reveal similarities in the soldiers' experiences on the battlefield. These shared elements center around camaraderie, and the collective experience of trauma. However, notable differences also existed, such as the objectives of each war, the character of the conflicts, and the public perceptions surrounding them. Despite the transformative shift in warfare from World War II to the Vietnam War, a consistent theme emerges in the narratives of Wiest and Ambrose- death and dealing with trauma.
From the beginning, Burgett discussed how his brother had joined the paratroopers and how his brother boasted about the exclusivity of airborne divisions. Because of what his brother said, Burgett became even more eager to volunteer for the war effort and took the steps to eventually register for the paratroopers. Since he was so willing to join, Burgett provided a zealous retelling of events that shaped the representation of his experiences. Additionally, Burgett displayed a certainty that no matter what occurred, he would become a paratrooper and survive the war. Burgett’s courage allowed his writing to be confident and sure of itself.
When you think of searching for something your mind would automatically go to looking for an object. But that’s not always true, for example searching for love, accomplishments, and new ideas could also be a search. In the book Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell, Marcus has some of these internal searches. So far in the book Marcus has successfully made it through BUD/s training and is now on a mission in the mountains of Afghanistan where they get in a conflict with an army.

Being enlisted in the war, Robert is compelled to see many things he was once blind to. After leaving “the ordinary world” he must toughen up to reality and embark on his journey to find purpose. According to Joseph Campbell, the “readers are experiencing the journey through the eyes of the hero; a hero’s primary purpose along his journey is to be separated from the ordinary world” and unravel many truths (Campbell, n.p.). Similarly, Robert is exposed to adult-like behaviour that frightens and forces him to mature faster. Findley introduces passages demonstrating war by using the literary device of irony to reveal his perception of the nature of the war by acknowledging war as something “logical”.
During the Victorian era (1837-1901) tabloids became full of a pseudo science called polygenesis. Polygenesis is where instead of having only two original ancestors like the bible teaches, there were multiple sets of ‘first parents’ through this the ‘scientists’ concluded some groups were better than others. The belief in polygenesis contradicted the bible which states there were only two, a man and a woman, and through them all of humanity came to exist. Jane is much more spiritual than christian, so she looks at foreigners the same way that victorian society looks at them. By that standard the victorians believed it was their responsibility to help these less refined beings.
The camouflage outfit and steeled boots are all too familiar to me. I used to see them every night, the jacket hanging from his chair and his boots placed in the corner. I never thought that I would miss such a simple sight before; I never realized how much I took my brothers for granted. When my eldest brother was deployed to Iraq, I was too young to fully comprehend the dangers of his situation. Even so, the fear my family felt affected me, and I too became scared.
