Mountain Climbing Essay “Mountaineering, also called alpinism, is not only climbing mountains the hard way with an ice axe, crampons, cams, and rope, but it is also simply challenging and difficult hiking up steep rocky slopes, talus fields, and along airy ridges studded with gendarmes in the high mountains” (Green 1). Mountain climbing doesn't have to be hard and extremely dangerous. Mountain climbing can be just walking up steep terrain to reach the summit. However, it's always smart, whether it's a large or small mountain, to go with a guide or companion. One piece of evidence can be found in chapter two of the novel Banner in the Sky titled “A Boy and a Man” by James Ramsey Ullman. “While the one below facing almost certain death remained calm and controlled” (Ullman 2). In this a man is stuck in a crevasse facing almost certain death but maintaining composer while, Rudi, the one that's safe is the one freaking out a little bit. This shows that in tough situations mountain climbers have to stay calm and composed in order to give themselves a chance at survival. One piece of piece of evidence can be found in the CBS news video about a man by the name of John All. He was climbing Mount Kanchenjunga and fell 70 feet into a crevasse, he broke four ribs and an arm. It took All 6 hours to climb out of the crevasse and another 3 to stagger to his tent (1:32). Most humans would have given up but John All saw a way out and got out. He only got out because he had the perseverance and determination to get out.
