There have been over 11,300 books that have been challenged since 1982. Book banning has been happening for centuries and should be stopped. Authors should have the right to write about whatever they want without having to worry about if it is appropriate or not. All of these reasons are what brings us to the many cons of banning books. As a result, many people believe books should not be banned in school/libraries because they should not have the right to take books away from everyone.
First, there are many cons to banning books.“Parents may control what their own children read, but don't have a right to restrict what books are available to other people.”(ProCon.org, 2) Parents do not have the right to take books away from everyone, but they do have the right to control what a child is reading. For example,”There are books in the chart that you wouldn’t believe were banned. Just have a look at Alice in Wonderland. In the 30s of the last century, the Chinese Censor General thought attributing human intelligence to animals was “an insult to humanity”, and that children should be protected from the negative influence of the book.” (Kowalczyk, 1) Numerous amount of books are not banned for the right reasons. For instance, Alice in Wonderland was only banned because people thought it was an “insult to humanity.” Which is kind of funny because Alice in Wonderland is the most well known story today. “The 1st amendment states that it protects the right to read what we want to read in America.”(Kowalczyk, 1) Book banning is taking away the right that Americans have to read whatever they want.
