The Pope rushes down the cold, grey steps. “We need to make sure no one gets their hands on this book,” he whispers to himself. In his hand The Pope has “Il Principe [The Prince]. The Pope lunges at a long piece of parchment paper, titled “Index Librorum Prohibitorum [Index of Forbidden Books].” Immediately he adds The Prince to the list, officially banning the novel. The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli and Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie are two commonly banned books around the world. For example, the Roman Catholic church and Protestant churches banned The Prince because of “moral corruption” (“The Municipal Machiavelli”). In the words, Christian churches teach an individual will gain salvation, (or rewards), for being respectful and kind-hearted. In The Prince, Machiavelli often states a good leader will denounce, deceit, or deceive other in order to gain an advantage. This is against the churches teachings. If an individual stating the church may be wrong about an issue, others will start to question all the church’s beliefs, Therefore, the prince can cause chaos in different states. In addition, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress was banned from “Todd Beamer High School” (Titus) because the novel was “sexually explicit” (Titus) and “inappropriate” (Titus) for the students. Ultimately, “the superintendent” (Titus) saw the novel was incredibly graphic, and banned the novel from the school. Occasionally, high schoolers can be ignorant on “sexually explicit” (Titus) material. As a result, a parent may become upset with the school, and start to question the school’s teachings. The parent may then alert other parents on the issue, resulting in disunity between parents. This will cause chaos in the school, resulting in less time to dedicate to improving the learning
