Rory Gorham Mr. Hale English 25 April 2024. Don’t Do it, We Love it! Banning the history of the snare! How could you, it’s amazing! Some people around the country are trying to ban To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Some school districts believe it is an inappropriate book to be showing their students because of the racial content. It shouldn’t be banned because of history, its representation of empathy and justice, and its literary value and success. Some people believe it’s a hard topic which I agree with, but you need to teach hard topics to get the point across and help educate the youth about bad times so it doesn’t happen again. To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because it represents empathy. Harper Lee does such an amazing job of showing empathy through Atticus. “Atticus Finch represents aspects of empathy: his ability to imagine the world from the perspective of others.” (uchicago) He sees through people into who they are as a person and can feel what they are going through; for example he knew when he did the case for Mr. Cunningham at the beginning of the book that he couldn’t pay for Atticus to defend him. But he did it anyways and put himself into Mr Cunninghams shoes and let him pay for food that he grew on the farm. For me, that really stood out as a moment where Atticus put others before himself and saw what others were going through. To Kill a Mockingbird has a lot of literary value and success. Her book teaches very good life lessons and she has won a ton of awards for her work. “Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird teaches the value of courage, loyalty, and honesty” (IPL.org) It has also won awards including the Pulitzer prize in 1961 which is regarded as the highest national honor in print journalism.
