Bessie was born to George and Susan Coleman and had 12 brothers and sisters; she was one of 13 children. The family lived in constant struggle because they had to deal with the conflicts of racism and poverty. As a result, Coleman’s father left the family in search of better opportunities, thus forcing the mother to assume all responsibility for all 13 children.

Her parents were Thomas Armstead and Mary Ackard. The family moved to Fort Worth, Texas when Lillian was a young toddler. She would go on to receive her early and formal education, graduating from the historically black institution, I. M. Terrell High School.

As we celebrate Black American History month this is a time to reflect on contributions made by many African Americans. One person that comes to mind is Barbara Jordan. Barbara Jordan was important because she had an impact on the African American community by being the first African American in the Texas Senate, a Civil Rights leader, a speaker for the Democratic National Convention, and she will always be remembered for her role in the Nixon impeachment. Jordan had many other accomplishments and she worked for the good of others until her death at the young age of 59. “Barbara Jordan was born in Houston, TX on February 21, 1936, and she was one of three daughters of Benjamin Jordan and Arlyne Jordan.”

She was raised up on her daddy's farm and raised as a normal girl but she did have to go to a different school then the white people in 1929 when she was in 11th grade she had to go out of school because her grandmother got sick and she had to help her.
