“Thump! The jury finds you guilty! Three life sentences without parole!” the young boys and girls that hear this sentence generally aren’t considered the best of kids, however locking away a juvenile for life takes much more thought than it takes to address this sentence to a legal adult. In “Locked Away Forever” by Patricia Smith the question is attempted to be answered, which is should juveniles receive life sentences without chance of parole?
Letter from a Fugitive Slave Letter from a Fugitive Slave, a letter written by Anthony Chase to his master explaining his reason for running away. Chase wrote this letter on August 8th, 1827 to explain his “criminal” conduct of seeking the freedom that was promised by the previous lord to the new lord. This document conveys Chase thoughts of duty and regret: duty to his master and to his family; and regret for the action he took to carry out his obligations. Chase explained that relief of his service was promised before the old master’s passing, but the mistress will not uphold the commitment, now that he seeks the old pledge. He seeks freedom to find true work to feed his family, a family he would never thought of forging if not for the
"The Scottsboro Boys" By Jessica McBirney explains the prejudge towards African-Americans during the mid 1900's. The author separates her ideas by piecing them in different sections of her writing using headings. However, she mentions the main idea of her informative writing throughout the different paragraphs. The main idea of her short writing was that the Scottsboro Boys' trials showed an enormous degree of racial inequality that existed in the United States' criminal justice system and most of the Southern United States. The Scottsboro Boys' trial sparked African-American protestors and activists to push the government to improve the racial equality in justice systems.
My culture essay who read the book, No Safe Place, Deborah Ellis, it is about the main character, Abdul, who is waking up in a ruined old tower. He hears a lot of sounds like water on the cement street and disco music from down the street. The book is different from my life; because I live in a nice, stable home with my mom and our pets. In the book I read it says that “Abdul was thin from too many months of being on the road, but strong from too many fights with other migrants” (Ellis, pg. 14). I personally do not have to travel around for my safety and feel safe at home.
Harriet Ann Jacobs known to the public as Linda Brent and Frederick Douglass both were the victims of slavery and succeed to escape its clutches. As they possessed the skill of literateness, after becoming free members of the American society, they decided to write down their experiences of living as slaves to share what they had witnessed. Consequently, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” is the fruit of Linda Brent’s labor, and Frederic Douglass delivered his testimony in “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave”. Additionally, this is not the point where their similarities diminish. They were also involved into abolitionist movement and work as social reformers which gained them recognition and esteem amid Northerners.
Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa, once said, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”. This means that being free is more than not being physically locked up, but to go beyond the physical. It is about living life in a way that helps others achieve the freedom that they deserve. In the novel, Among the Hidden, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, Luke Garner is a third child and because of the Population Law he is illegal and doesn’t have the freedom that his brothers have. Similarly, in “Two Sisters Two Americas”, by Brooke Ross, Veronica Saravia came to the US without permission, making her an illegal immigrant, yet her younger sister, who was born
From 1896 up until 1995 the Holmesburg Prison in Pennsylvania was in constant use. Much of the history at Holmesburg’s contains instances of rioting, murder, rape and even medical experimentation. Most prisons claim some violence in their past but Holmesburg’s borders on barbaric. Maybe this strong negative energy is what keeps the ghosts of Holmesburg Prison so active.
The Fugitive slave law was an act passed to help southern slave owners maintain their slaves. The act was part of the “Compromise of 1850” proposed by Henry Clay. The compromise was made to resolve disputes between the south and north about land and slavery. The south ended up having slavery allowed below the “36,30” and California joined in as a free state. In the 1840s there were many problems of runaway slaves to the North to become free men.
- The importance of Harriet Tubman is, she was an abolitionist and freed hundreds of slaves out of slavery. She returned at least 19 times. The journey back to the North was known as the Underground Railroad. Tubman was known for her courage and for keeping the fugitives that she led safe. The beginning of the 17th Century marked the practice of slavery which continued till next 250 years by the colonies and states in America. Slaves, mostly from Africa, worked in the production of tobacco and cotton crops. Later , they were employed or ‘enslaved’ by the whites as for the job of care takers of their houses. The practice of slavery also led the beginning of racism among the people of America. The blacks were restricted for all the basic and legally privileged rights.
In the autobiography of “My Bondage and My Freedom” by Frederick Douglass”, the word victimization use by Frederick, is describing a particular person being a “victim”, a hopeless person that is unknown to the world system with no identity. As a result, slaves were people being victimized by the slavery system, including slave owners and non- slave owners. Although, African American were the main victims being discriminated by their character, why does Douglass believed that the slave owners and non- slave owners were also under the category of being victimize by the system? Is it because before African American were shipped to America, most white owners like Mrs. Auld had a kind heart towards blacks until she was told to change her
What common themes bond together the literary works of the 1800’s? Frederick Douglass and Kate Chopin both realized that people were not being treated fairly and thus it influenced their writing. Through personal experiences and observations Frederick Douglass conveyed how African Americans in My Bondage and My Freedom were treated unfairly. Kate Chopin used the plot to show how women were treated unfairly in “The Story of an Hour”. My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass tells of some of the experiences he went through as a slave.

Many slaves have escaped through the course of history, each pursuing freedom in various ways. While some were successful, others ended in failure and were punished severely. Some made it through pure luck while others went through careful planning. The first and most common escape strategy was through music.
