It helped people claim land, and made property lines much easier to mark. Also, it helped keep livestock in fences. So, now farmers could buy more livestock, and not have to worry about neighbors being angry that their livestock was in their yard. Also, farmers put barbed wire around their fields to mark the property lines, and it helped keep livestock from getting into other farmers fields. Now ranchers out west couldn’t just let their herds roam free on grass but had to build fence. Also, it was easier to keep everyone’s livestock separated because they were not altogether on the free range any more. Because of all the demand for barbed wire, Joseph’s business kept growing bigger because everyone was using barbed to mark their property. However, with more demand for wire, many other people started to make and sell barbed wire making it harder to sell it because they could sell it for a cheaper price. Then, Glidden sold out to his part of the business to Charles Washburn who formed the L.L. Ellwood and Washburn & Moen Company. The company faced, many struggles with people filing lawsuits against them because they did not think they had a correct patent. It kept getting harder and harder to make money and produce barbed wire with more and more competition.
