More Than Just a Sport Ever since I was a little girl, basketball has been an important part of my life. Whether I am watching a game on T.V. or playing in a game myself, I know that without it I could not be who I am today. When I step onto the floor of the basketball court, I can feel the rush and excitement course through my veins. To me, basketball is not just some sport that I love to play. It has inspired me to become the person I am today. When I first started playing basketball, no one took me seriously. I was the only girl in my class at the Boys Club in Flushing, as well as the shortest. At the time, it did not really bother me, but that changed when I moved on to playing for an actual team. From my very first step onto a basketball court when I was six, to every step I take seven years later, I know that I have changed a lot. I am not the shy kid who was scared about what other people thought of her. Now I know that I cannot let other people tell me what I can or cannot do. My basketball team came in second in the playoffs. I made my school’s varsity team in 6th grade despite my height. Basketball has even given me the courage to try new things, such as lacrosse. Without basketball, I could not be the person I am today. It gave me confidence and courage that I did not know I had before.
My family, friends, and coach have always encouraged me to pursue basketball. When I wanted to quit, they were the reason I did not. When I was discouraged, they told me never to give up even when others told me that I could not play. When someone fouled me on the court, they were the ones who told me to get back up and keep playing. Without them, I would probably have stopped basketball long
